UK Mill Closure
We learned this week that Aylesford Newsprint who have been making paper in Kent since 1922 have called in the administrators. The mill produced around 400,000 tonnes of newsprint each year and the loss of this capacity will further reduce the demand for, and price of, waste paper in the UK.
This is devastating news to an industry which has seen a steady reduction in mill infrastructure over recent decades and recyclers cash-flows will be further decimated as invoices to Aylesford are likely to remain unpaid.
Fear and competition seem to be underpinning a very fragile recycling market but the current position of too high rebates and low charging is clearly unsustainable and recyclers will have to address this in order to survive.
These are the most difficult times we have known in a notoriously challenging industry.
